Overview of Mongolia’s Water Resources System and Management a Country Water Security Assessment

Date: July 2020

Abstract

Water safety in Mongolia faces challenges due to its extreme climate conditions and regional disparities. With an average annual rainfall ranging from 80mm in the Gobi Desert to 350mm in the north, Mongolia is considered low in precipitation. The IUCN assesses water security through five dimensions, including rural, urban, and environmental aspects, as well as resilience to water-related disasters. Recommendations for improvement encompass various sectors such as agriculture, energy, and mining, emphasizing better management and infrastructure development. Institutional assessments highlight the role of Basin Organizations (BSOs), which are still in early stages of development, needing support for stability and effective operation. Overall, enhancing water safety requires addressing regional discrepancies, improving infrastructure, and strengthening institutional frameworks.
